Review of patient safety at Mental Health Complex to take year – Journal Sentinel

Board will issue recommendation in the interim for consideration in county’s 2011 budget

A community advisory group on patient safety at the Milwaukee County Mental Health Complex will take a year to complete its review, leaders of the group said Tuesday at its first meeting.

The county’s mental health Community Advisory Board will also try to develop interim recommendations so they can be considered for the county’s 2011 budget, said Barbara Beckert, the board’s co-chairwoman. That would require submitting those proposed changes to County Executive Scott Walker in advance of his budget introduction in late September.

Advocacy group’s report slams Mental Health Complex

Patients at Milwaukee County’s Mental Health Complex are not kept safe from sexual predators, and comments by administrators and staff claiming otherwise reveal a disturbing indifference, says a watchdog group that has reviewed patient files.

Of 17 patients whose records were reviewed, 10 had improper sexual contact with other patients and five were sexually assaulted at the complex during the last half of 2009, according to a blistering report compiled by Disability Rights Wisconsin.
