Disability Rights Wisconsin Urges Renewed Focus on Employment & Independence for People with Disabilities

Disability Rights Wisconsin supports the Department of Health Services’ renewed focus on improving employment outcomes for people with disabilties in Medicaid funded programs. A December 13 report from DHS to the Legislature on Family Care outlines several new Department initiatives to increase integrated employment rates as a means to both improve an individual’s health status and reduce reliance on publicly funded supports. DRW sees this is a positive step.

DRW recently wrote to DHS Secretary Kitty Rhoades sharing concerns about the state’s lagging employment outcomes and encouraging a shift in use of Medicaid dollars as the state renews its Medicaid waivers with the federal government. Wisconsin’s Disability Policy Partnership Reports Significant Outcomes

Wisconsin’s Disability Policy Partnership (DPP), which includes Disability Rights Wisconsin, the Waisman Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, and the Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities, is concluding its third year of collaboration. Congresswoman Gwen Moore Sends Letter in Support of Integrated Employment

Disability Rights Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities worked closely with Congresswoman Gwen Moore’s office to support her in communicating to the federal government on a new, important Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) rule that will impact Wisconsin. The rule more clearly defines “integrated settings” and supports states in using Medicaid dollars to ensure that people with disabilities are not segregated. Congresswoman Moore decided to issue a letter to HHS Secretary Sebelius after meeting with a group of self-advocate and family member constituents who shared their success stories about integrated employment. The constituents shared a vision for what integrated employment and inclusive communities should look like in Wisconsin. The final CMS rule is expected to be issued within the next month. Disability Rights Congratulates Governor-Legislature on DVR Bill Signing

On Friday, December 6 Disability Rights Wisconsin staff watched as Governor Walker signed a bill providing additional funds to support the employment of people with disabillities. Disabilty Rights Wisconsin thanks the Governor, Senator Shilling and Representative Shankland, as well as members of the legislature who provided near unanimous support for this critical investment.
