Assistive Technology Advocacy
Disability Rights Wisconsin challenges denials for funding for assistive technology and related services for people with disabilities. If a person needs assistive technology and is denied funding for it by a school, Medical Assistance, or private insurance, DRW can help fight to get coverage for that technology.
DRW staff help parents work with their schools to get needed assistive technology (AT) assessments and then get the AT incorporated into their child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). If necessary, advocates can assist parents with mediation and due process.
If Medical Assistance (MA) denies a client prior authorization for coverage for wheelchairs, augmentative communication devices, or other AT, DRW advocates can help with administrative hearings to seek coverage for the medically necessary AT.
