Self-Determination / Guardianship

“Self-determination” refers to policy initiatives focused on giving people with disabilities control over individualized, flexible funding for long-term support services.

“Guardianship” is a legal mechanism which enables one person, called a guardian, to make legally recognized and enforceable decisions for another person, called the ward.

People with disabilities deserve the right to make their own decisions about housing, healthcare, finances, and relationships. No matter what an individual’s status, they should be supported and empowered to live as safely and independently as possible, while retaining his or her rights to the fullest possible degree.
